In my family started this tradition my grandmother, just after the World War II. My grandfather has been fighting at Slovak national uprising and as a reward he has been given a licence which enabled him to run a guest-house. In this pub we served also roast geese and “lokse”(special type of pancakes). Unfortunately, in 1948, they lost the licence.
But my grandmother(we called her Betka) has never ,,given up“ the geese. In Slovenský Grob there were those times pleasant conditions for breeding geese. There was enough water, a meadow for grazing them and for growing corn, which represents the main component of geese food. The geese were very useful and nothing has been ever thrown away. Fat from roast goose has been used in our kitchen, the liver, the entrails, the plumage and goose were sold. Every Friday brought my grandmother geese to local baker to roast them and then, on Saturday, she sold them at the marketplaces in nearby towns.
Cold goose tasted good, but fresh one would surely taste better. The same probably realized our customers and they started to pick up the geese personally. Later they didn´t want to wait until they arrive home and eat the delicious roast goose. This is how our customers became our guests and they could savour on roast goose in our house, in the kitchen but aleso in other rooms. It sometimes happened that in every rooms there was another group of guests.
The space in our house was soon deficient because of big demand. So my grandmother decided to rebuilt grandfathers´ joinery to a guestroom, with capacity of 45 people. In this period there were organized special trips by members of ROH and socialist brigade-work. To roast goose they got a loksa, gherkins, federweisser(freshly made wine) or wine. From well they could drink fresh water. For those , who wanted to use toilet, thera was a nice outhouse behind our house.
Special trips on booking from all over the Slovakia and Moravia were organized every friday and Saturday, from september to all Saint's Day.
The local comitee decided, that those citizens, who were offering rost geese and advertised Slovenský Grob, do not have to pay taxes, because he advertisement was for our village more precious. Over 20 years has been this system efficient.(was it working like that).
In 1986 my granmother fell ill and tradition was interupted. After nine long years, in 1995, the tradition was reborn by me and my parents. The grandfathers´ joinery and grandmothers´guestroom were reconstructed and we opened a restaurant called Roast goose by family Zápražný, to honour the fonders.
We had new toilets, new bar, but also damanding guests. So In 2004 we decided for a radical change. We bowed out of the old a new welcomed. Besides the restaurant we have opened a pension and parking area. We hope you will like our services and hope to see you soon.
